The Book IS your Store!
Multi media Ebooks are not just about furnishing a richer consumer experience, larger satisfaction, and fidelity. Properly done, they seem to be a natural fit for up-sells and CrossSells, and may be the best application to date to sell more high-quality products and services.
The idea of a publisher paraphrasing other products is nothing new. Recommended publications, either by the writer or the publisher, are frequently listed at the end of most books. The problem has often been to get the reader to note and, just as importantly, to do something.
First, a little sum up of the "old school" issues just alluded to...
Matter 1: Readers essentially have to read those inventories of other publications, buried at the very end, really outside the end, of the book. Few trouble. But for people that do, they should write down what they're enthusiastic about, go to their PC, Google it (or simply go to Amazon and search for it there) buy it, and wait for it to be shipped.
It might not seem like a big score, but it's actually Enormous. The active person, easily distracted by many more pressing issues, is likelier to say, "I'll do that later." The majority of the time, later never comes.
Matter 2: Not only are these upsells buried at the back of the book, they're uninspired in what they offer. This is principally due to order publishers and writers limited by standard, Old Skool publishing ideas.
To explain, think beyond books and CDs and audiotapes. Think about products and services the shopper would probably be interested in and then give it to him in a fast, digital download form.
Contemporary clients are very demanding. Not only do they need more of what they like, they need it now, and they don't want to jump through hoops to get it. So if you make them work, you are going to lose the sale. Simple as that.

Now enter Amazon's Affiliate program...
As you surely know already, Amazon is the biggest bookseller in the world (irrespective of what Barnes & Nobles claims).
But get this...
80 % of Amazon's money comes from its affiliate program. What that implies is that the overpowering majority of Amazon's money comes from folks selling other individual's merchandise, and not just books! 80 percent!
Here's where it gets a little fascinating for us and where Amazon's bipolar tendencies truly shows. As an online retailer, they're the unchallenged kings of affiliate marketing. But as a hardware / software manufacturer, i.e, the Kindle, they went the closed, proprietary, black box way. And history will show within six months -- well basically the writing's already on the wall -- that this strategy may have been remarkably short-sighted.
What does this have to do with a Multi-Media eBook being a store?
To start with, it reveals how not to build an eBook reader gizmo.
Let me put my neck on the line here.
Inside a year, Amazon will have a true tablet gizmo similar to the iPad. This will occur not by choice, but by consumer demand for all-in-one solutions rather than stand-alone devices that need the patron to tote around another piece of hardware.
Now the good news for writers, book publishers and just about anyone who would like to make cash from Multi-media eBooks is...
You do not have to form all of your own content to earn income. What this implies is that you don't have to make all of the extra products that the client would find interesting after or "during" their read of your Multi-media electronic book.
Even today, if you needed to, you could join the Amazon affiliate program ... it takes about a couple of minutes to sign-up ... choose the products you feel your customers would like, and embed links to them in your Multimedia eBook any place you want. And each time a reader clicks one of "your" links and buys something, anything on Amazon, you get a commission.
And it doesn't stop with Amazon.
There are more affiliate portals out there that generate billions in commissions. My favorite is Clickbank, but there are many them. And I am yet to find a single one who charges even a penny to enroll.
Just don't get carried away. Don't change the theme of your book to fit the largest affiliate possibilities.
And listen to me, you'll be lured when you see the kinds of commissions you can make on Clickbank and other affiliate portals. Stay in your area of experience, and if you do not have a higher price product, seek out someone that does.
And just like that, your book just changed into a specialty store!

Remember, you don't have to make everything you sell on the internet. In reality if you try, possibilities are you will give up out of the sheer magnitude of effort.
But if you currently have a vast inventory of books prepared to be digitised, go for it. Just be absolutely certain they're Multi media ready so that you can upsell your own stuff, and that way, not pay any affiliate commissions.
So for you writers and book publishers out there, greener pastures await you. All you have to do is do some non-stressful research, and get going.
Whether the "e-book is the store" idea includes your products and services, or someone else's, or a mixture of both, is entirely up to you.
